HALF a dozen towns and villages in West Somerset are being offered fun fitness classes by Age UK Somerset – and new classes are on the horizon.

They are for anyone, whether they are generally fit and active or sometimes feel unsteady on their feet.

Age UK Somerset focuses on keeping local residents active and independent and says that physical activity has a huge positive effect on health at any age, but among older adults doing more can have a life-changing impact.

The classes range from the general fitness movement to music sessions Mature Movers to falls prevention sessions, Stay Strong Stay Steady, and easy to learn tai chi qi gong.

Every day in Somerset around eight people aged over 65 are admitted to hospital as a result of a fall and this can have a devastating impact.

Stay Strong Stay Steady is falls-prevention programme with proven results. The classes are run in partnership with Somerset County Council and are accessed by referral.

Tai chi is as effective as most high-impact exercises in improving circulation, co-ordination and decreasing blood pressure. Importantly for older people, it is extremely effective at improving physical balance, vitally important for helping to prevent falls in later life.

The charity has opened 12 new tai chi qi gong classes across Somerset in the last few weeks, as part of its ongoing plan to keep old adults fit and independent.

Age UK Somerset currently has classes running in Dunster, Minehead, Old Cleeve, Stogursey, Watchet and Williton. With the exception of the Stay Strong Stay Steady classes, they are open to everyone and there is no need to book.
