A CAMPAIGN aimed at inspiring people living with long-term health conditions to be more active has been set up – with particular emphasis on West Somerset.

We Are Undefeatable Somerset was recently launched by Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP) at The Beach Hotel in Minehead, with key speakers from the health and sport sectors, and local ambassadors sharing their own stories.

The initiative grew from a country-wide study which showed one in four people lived with a long-term condition and were more likely to be inactive as a result.

While the campaign is targeting all of Somerset, a large focus is on West Somerset, where the ageing population is growing fast.

“Data shows we are living longer but the difference between healthy life expectancy and life expectancy is widening,” said Sarah Coombs, sports development manager for SASP.

The campaign aims to highlight the many ways in which people with health conditions can become more active.

It is using ten local ambassadors from across the county, who have one or more health conditions, to help motivate and encourage others to move more in ways that suit them.

The ambassadors’ stories highlight how physical activity can increase health and happiness through fun, friendships and better physical fitness.

SASP hopes they will inspire other older people with long-term health conditions to think about moving just a little more to improve their quality of life.

From people with health conditions from cancer to fibromyalgia, arthritis to dementia, the campaign is encouraging everyone to get more active in all kinds of ways – including organised walks, women’s wellness groups, the Beach Hotel fitness suite and more.
