A RECORD-BREAKING crowd basking in glorious sunshine made sure that Bank Holiday Monday’s 79th Hawkridge Revel and Gymkhana lived up to its reputation as a highlight of the Exmoor year.

The organisers reported that the event went without a hitch and visitors to the stunning hill-top site enjoyed all-day show-jumping, the popular dog show, Mountain and Moorland classes, and busy sideshows and stalls.

Numbers of entries for equine events were down this year, in line with other local shows, possibly driven by the early Bank Holiday and consequent pressure on dates.

By contrast, the dog show ring was very busy, attracting a large crowd delighted by the child handlers and a wide variety of breeds and hybrids.

This year, judge Stephanie Hill took the roving mike and explained the best points of entries to spectators as she came to her decisions.

Rex Milton also gave an informative introduction to the Mountain and Moorland winners as they paraded around the show ring and provided a potted history of the iconic Exmoor pony and the special herds scattered across the moors.

Prompted by Les Silverlock on the roving mike, small children attempted to explain their fancy dress outfits from Thomas the Tank Engine, Barbie Doll, and George and the Dragon, to the Policeman with Robber and the Cowboy with Cow.

One unexpected outcome was a promise from a small boy to come back next year to help out with the commentating!

The traditional foot races were once again popular with visitors, from the under-threes ‘sprint’ to the three-legged races and the ‘one lap of the ring’ adult contests, which included two older ladies, aged 72 and 80, who jogged round behind the younger and more athletic runners, attracting a big cheer from the crowd.

An essential event at the revel was judging a magnificent display of red deer antlers.

The competition is for horns which have been found on the moor where stags shed them in the spring, and rivalry among antler enthusiasts was fierce.

The closing event of the revel was one of the most popular - the free-range dog race.

Handlers struggled to contain the excited animals as another family member, 200 metres away, called them to come to them.

As the white flag drops, in theory ,every dog races to its caller, in a straight line. Some did.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: “One of the pleasures of these wonderful local shows lies in theprogrammes, listing the sponsors of each class and the donors of cups, trophies, and shields over the years - a network of the locally famous, past and present characters.

“t is a snapshot of local history, then and now.

“We now look forward to next year, when we celebrate 80 years of the Hawkridge Revel.

“Brainstorming for new ideas begins now and anybody who has one is welcome to ring 01398 341 850 and speak to Marion.

“All ideas which fit the revel will be considered, and may be implemented.”
