GARDENERS across West Somerset were recognised for their green fingers at an awards ceremony in Minehead.

The gardeners, who were taking part in the annual Magna Housing Gardening Competition for tenants, were recognised for their skill and hard work in producing beautiful displays of flowers and quantities of fruit and vegetables.

All 38 competition entrants attended the award event at Silvermead sheltered housing in Alcombe and ten winners were chosen for the various categories.

Steve Sully and Nicola Balman, of Allerford, were the overall winners of the Tim Chilcott Cup, while youngest gardener Maiya Binding from Washford, won the children’s section.

Steve said he was really proud to win the cup: “I’d encourage everyone to get out in their gardens and give it a go, even if you only have a small garden. It is so rewarding, I love being in the fresh air and getting the plants to grow.

“We used to have a small garden, but now we have a huge one, and can see Dunkery Beacon and Exmoor. We love spending time out there and when we get home from work we are straight out in the garden, digging and dead heading until it gets dark.”

Judging took place over two days and standards were high.
