A Yeovil-based organisation says it can maintain a visible presence in the town following a £1,000 grant awarded by South Somerset District Council.

The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association's (SSAFA) South Somerset Division provide support and service to ex-service people, their dependents and families.

Last year the division helped 154 people by managing to find funds amounting to some £72,000 from various sources.

A number of individuals were assisted with claiming benefits they didn't realise they were eligible to receive.

A SSAFA spokesperson said about the grant: "These funds will allow SSAFA to maintain a visible presence in Yeovil by operating an office in Borough Arcade."

The office is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-12noon. SSAFA can also be reached by phoning 01935 433 400 outside office hours.

The spokesperson added: "Much of the case work is initiated by Social Services, Citizens' Advice Bureau, occupational therapists as well as other local volunteer organisations.

"The majority of people helped are in the age group 60-80, reflecting the large numbers of ex-World War Two men and women who served this country, as well as the millions that subsequently undertook national service - all of whom are (with their dependents) eligible for help."
