WHILE Formula One drivers were tackling the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, Watchet staged its own version – its annual wheelbarrow race.
Spectators lined the course, which takes in pitstops at the town’s pubs for a swift half in each, as two-man teams raced around the “Circuit de Watchet”.
The event, organised by Watchet Live, has categories for the fastest men’s, women’s and mixed teams, and another for the best fancy dress.
First to finish, disguised as bunches of grapes, were Liam Gallagher and Sam Shaw, half a minute ahead of the runners-up, with the third placed pair a further two minutes back.
Jane Dunn and Hannah Griffith Prendergrast took the ladies’ title and Lewis Cartwright and Jessica Batts were the mixed winners.
The Runner Beans – Dan Mossman and Ollie Waterman doubling up as Rowan Atkinson’s character Mr Bean – won the fancy dress award.
More photos, results and full report in tomorrow’s Free Press (June 2).
