THE UK government plans to test its Emergency Alerts System, with phone sirens set to go off around the country this September.

Emergency Alerts is a UK government system that provides warning and advice in a life-threatening emergency.

On Sunday, September 7, at 3pm, mobile phones and tablets will vibrate and make a loud siren-like sound, even if the device set on silent. The alert message will confirm that it is a test and that no further action needs to be taken.

A spokesperson for the government said: “Regular testing ensures the system is functioning correctly, should it need to be used in a life-threatening emergency.”

These alerts may sound in the event of varying life-threatening emergencies including wildfires, severe flooding or extreme storms.
