Civic officials have said that all Yeovil households will have received equipment for a kerbside collection scheme by Christmas.
Around 58 tonnes of recyclable material was collected in the first three weeks of the scheme.
At the moment, there are 11,000 households involved in and around Yeovil.
By Christmas the whole of the town will be covered as well as the villages of Lufton, Thorne Coffin, Yeovil Marsh, Mudford Sock, Ashington, Hinton, Chilton Cantelo, Marston Magna, Rimpton and Parkway.
The next step after that is to have the whole of south Somerset covered by June next year.
Each household is issued with a plastic recycling box for the disposal of paper, food and drink cans, clothes and aluminium foil. The box and comprehensive information are delivered about two weeks before the first collection is due.
South Somerset District Council said the first three weeks had been encouraging.
Councillor Nick Speakman said: "We have been encouraged by the public's response to the new service and the participation rate has been very high.
"Residents have followed the advice given in the leaflet, which makes the sorting and recycling process a lot easier.
"With their continued support, we will more than double the amount of waste recycled - and that is great news for the environment."
