MINEHEAD and West Somerset Golf Club's Junior Open attracted 37 competitors from as far afield as Saltford and Cadiz (Spain).

The winner of the Daily Telegraph qualifier for the best gross was Lee Corfield (Burnham and Berrow) with 68, who the following week reached the last 16 of the English Amateur Championship.

The day was again sponsored by Butlins Family Entertainment Resorts, who were represented at the presentation by "Noddy" and a Redcoat.

The prizes were presented by the Minehead lady captain Iris James, who earlier in the year had organised a bridge evening which raised over £300 for junior funds, from which team shirts were purchased.

The Clarke Cup, played on Sunday over 17 holes, produced some remarkable scores in spite of heavy rain. The winner with a nett 61 was Peter Hensley, who beat two other players on the same score — Dave Shambrook and Dave Ackland.

Six players were one shot back on 62 — Phil Mees, Pete Jones, Phil Watts, Bill Brown, Bob Fossey and Bob Coburn and Kevin Dodd had a nett 63. Lowest gross score was Keith Babb's 68.

The club matches against Enmore resulted in a 21/2-21/2 draw for the A team at home and a 41/2- 11/2 loss away for the B team.

Winners for Minehead A were Denis Compton and Phil Collins and Bob Fossey and Sammy Chung with a half for Denis Meadows and Chris Perkins, and for the B team there was a win for Pete Jones and Trevor John and a half for Gordon Pugh and Steve Gay.

The seniors' unbeaten run also came to an end when they lost away to Royal North Devon Seniors by 5-1. Sole winners for Minehead were Gordon Graham and John Roberts.
