150 years ago - August 13th 1871

* If a man about to be attacked by a dog throws a stone at the dog and the stone goes through a window, the man is liable for the damage. This was the judge’s ruling at Williton County Court when he gave judgement for Mr Thomas Clarke, draper, of Minehead, whose window was smashed by a stone in the circumstances described.

* The heat in the harvest field was causing workers to collapse.

100 years ago - August 13 1921

* A car carrying a coffin with a body in it overturned between the hairpin bends coming down Porlock Hill. The coffin was pinned underneath and damaged. After repairs, it was transferred to a hearse and dispatched to Birmingham.

* A branch of the Middle Classes Union was formed in Williton. A speaker stated that the middle classes were being crushed between the upper and nether millstones of multi-millionaires and labour extremists.

* Tables, produce and people were swept together in a heap when a large marquee collapsed after the central pole snapped during a fete held by the combined churches of Countisbury and Lynmouth in the grounds of Glenthorne. There were no serious injuries.

* A coach driver who went at 15mph along the Minehead-Dunster road was fined £2 at Dunster Petty Sessions for speeding.

* A big gang of men and boys could be seen toiling in a Williton field to dig out two hedges. Their removal would turn three fields into one to create Williton’s war memorial recreation ground. The Comrades of the Great War were acting as pioneers.

50 years ago - August 14 1971

* Forestry worker Philip Blackmore grew a cabbage weighing more than 25lbs and measuring 6ft 6ins in diameter and 2ft 7ins around the heart, in his garden in Monksilver.

* A fruit machine mechanic who left his car in High, Street, Porlock, while he had a cup of tea was fined £3 by Minehead magistrates.

* Members of Porlock and District Chamber of Trade called for an adequate car park in the village. Until then, they wanted the county council to stop painting double yellow lines along the gutterways.
