A BID to turn Halsway Manor into a national centre for folk arts in a £4 million redevelopment has been given the green light. West Somerset Council's planning committee has approved a scheme which will see the creation of a woodland activity centre, a new performance space and additional residential accommodation at the Grade 11* listed manor near Crowcombe. Councillors backed the plans for England's only dedicated residential folk art centre at the committee's meeting last Thursday. The Halsway Manor Society, which is behind the proposals, now plans to launch a fundraising drive to raise the money. Society chief executive Paul James said the aim of the redevelopment was to conserve the manor's heritage and make the site more accessible for people of all ages and abilities to take part in a wide range of folk arts activities. "We are absolutely delighted that the council has passed our planning application," he said. "We can now launch our funding appeal and start the planning work to realise this exciting scheme which brings many benefits both for the preservation of the historic building and for anyone who wants to participate in folk art courses, events and activities." The manor was established as an independent charity in 1965 to provide courses, events and activities focusing on traditional music, dance, song, storytelling, folklore and arts and crafts. Its Kennedy Grant library contains thousands of books and recordings and is a recognised resource for research and study. Society chairman Robin Williams said the planning approval was wonderful news. "We're grateful to all those who have contributed to the application with their advice and support." Mr Williams said Halsway Manor would celebrate its golden jubilee in 2015, marking 50 years as a folk arts centre. "Now we can embark on the conservation and development work necessary to see Halsway Manor continue for another 50 years."
