I would like to clarify some of the points made by Paul Davies in his letter re the proposed community centre at Irnham Road (Free Press November 2).
Firstly, the sum of £2 million which has been bandied about was not mentioned at the meeting of Minehead Town Council in October.
Rather, it appears to have been arrived at by people adding together various amounts mentioned during the meeting and, as is so often the case, making 2 plus 2 become 5, or even 6!
Secondly, there are two reasons why the possibility of offices at the site (but not within the community building) are being considered.
The building is designed to comply with the requirements of those making grants for it. The suggestion of an office building nearby on the site would allow space for the administration of the community building and for a community office which other local groups might use.
The existing town council offices are rented and are a cost to the taxpayer, as are rooms hired for public council meetings.
An office within the community office building and the use of the larger room in the community building itself for meetings would, in effect, save these expenses and hence, after a few years, prove a saving to the local taxpayers.
Finally, there was no ‘behind-closed-doors’ council meeting held as stated in Mr Davies’s letter. There was a discussion afternoon for councillors to more fully look at the situation in preparation for the next council meeting in November.
In accordance with our standing orders, no ‘official’ council meeting can be called without the necessary notice being publicised on the council website and at the council offices.
We can assure all your readers that Minehead Town Council is endeavouring to be as open and transparent as possible in all its dealings.
It is for these reasons that two opportunities are being offered (tomorrow and next Saturday) for residents to look at the plans, ask questions of the officers and make comments.
We hope many people will take up this offer and give their feedback based on accurate information.
Cllr Norman Hercock, Mayor, Minehead Town Council.
