CARS and nearby houses were hit with debris when a recent gale ripped half the roof off the Allerford and Selworthy Community Hall.

As a result, all events there have been cancelled for the time being.

Nearly £20,000 worth of damage was caused, residents will be told at the hall’s forthcoming AGM, which has had to be moved to the Allerford Reading Rooms and will now take place on March 14 at 7.30pm.

“After nearly half the roof had been blown off, and torrential rain poured into the building, damaging electric wiring and covering the recently resurfaced floor with an inch of water,” said committee member Gail Crane.

“We have just celebrated the hall’s 50th anniversary and we hope to have things back to normal as soon as possible.

“The hall is a focal point of the village and everyone depends on it.”

Updates will be posted on the hall website www.allerfordandselworthyhall.co.uk
