SIR — Whilst walking past the auctioneers' premises in Williton recently I noticed the "financial thermometer" in the window indicating the amount of money raised so far by the village hall committee, and to their credit it registers over £90,000.

This is certainly a magnificent sum, although I understand that somewhere in the region of £70,000 has already been spent on the proposed site for the hall, for which no planning application has been made of yet.

Whether one agrees with building the hall or not, there has been a lot of hard work done by the committee in raising this amount, and when I moved further down the road I saw a board advertising a fundraising musical evening to be held at Danesfield School, where I should imagine the committee would be hoping that between 100 and 200 people will attend.

Then I remembered seeing a similar board in the same place a week or so earlier advertising an auction in the Church Rooms for the same funds, and this started me thinking.

As the committee also held bingo evenings at St Peter's School and is now contemplating holding a jumble sale at the Williton Club, is it not backing up my letter of a few weeks ago when I asked if Williton really needed a village hall as there are plenty of alternatives in the village already.

I read in the Free Press that a public meeting is to be held concerning the proposed grass track which is wanted to provide access to the proposed village hall site for invalid cars and service vehicles.

When I saw the original plans for the village hall there were also two photographs showing a field before and after a grass road had been laid.

Now what concerns me is the fact that I could not tell the difference, so how is anyone meant to know where the track is meant to be?

Since my original letter I have had many people stop or phone me and express support about what I had said, so should a correctly worded questionnaire be sent around to the villagers, and picked up as only a small percentage sent them back the last time, to find out their thoughts concerning the need of a hall, position, size, etc?

We've got the 'Angel of the North' and now the south is going to build a very large white horse, but does Williton need a white elephant? Certainly not near or on the Recreation Ground.
