A WILLITON sports facility aiming to attract young people and help to reduce stress caused to the area by the development of Hinkley Point C was given a £23,000 CIM Fund grant by West Somerset Council on Wednesday.

Councillors agreed to help fund a £33,754 upgrade of Williton Royal British Legion’s Target Shooting Club’s Bridge Street facilities to encourage more members, especially young people, to take up the sport.

The council’s community and housing lead officer, Lisa Redston, said that the funding would allow the club to improve the facilities available to the community for social activity and fund-raising.

It was planned to upgrade the existing 50m range to enable different shooting distances and prepare for phase two of the scheme which would involve new buildings and a rebuilt clubhouse.

Ms Redston said that, because of its location, Williton was seeing an increase in population which, due to the Washford Cross park and ride scheme, was likely to grow further.

Increased traffic congestion and footfall could result in more stress. She believed the project could enhance the quality of life of those using the range, especially young people – for whom there was a shortage of activities – and teach new skills.

Ms Redston said Williton Parish Council supported the project and match-funding had been secured: “It offers an activity that appeals to young people and is used by youth groups.”

She added:“Expanding the facility to increase its appeal to a wider range of people and abilities will provide an impacted community with a further leisure offer.”
