DEFRA has agreed to pay £15,000 towards the total cost of signing for Dunster. The Exmoor Trust's application to provide revised signing for the village was made on behalf of the Dunster Action Group whose plan included a significant revision and improvement of signage for the village. Exmoor National Part Authority is contributing work on the new permissive walkway and providing a new orientation board on Dunster Steep, and the Dunster Tourism Group is producing leaflets for visitors. Imagemakers, a nationally recognised firm based in Okehampton, was involved in the production of the main signage plan. It will be completed in stainless steel, black powder coated panels to cover the village route waymarkers and finger posts as well as orientation and enticer panels. Contract negotiations will now be finalised and it is planned that work will be completed before the autumn. The total cost will be about £17,000 with the Exmoor Trust promising a further £1,000 grant. At the last meeting of the Dunster Action Group, the Dunster community was invited to raise a further £700. Exmoor Trust chairman Edwin Beckett said: "We are delighted that Defra have made this grant under their Rural Enterprise Scheme. "It represents nearly 90 per cent of the costs, which is a very high proportion and we are most grateful. "The Exmoor Trust will continue in the management of the grant but the national park authority will supervise the delivery of the contract. "With the opening of the new Avill walk, work progressing on the Tithe Barn and now improved signage, we hope that visitors will soon notice a real improvement to their experience when stopping in Dunster."
