"BUTLINS is back!" was the proud proclamation from the resort director of the Minehead complex this week as the holiday company revealed West Somerset could be in line to get a purpose-built luxury hotel. In a major break from the traditional 'hi-de-hi' image of the 1950s holiday chalets, the holiday giant this week unveiled a more 'la-de-dah' look with a 160-room hi-tech hotel at the company's Bognor Regis resort. And Minehead could be next in line for the luxury treatment if the Bognor Regis development proves successful. Despite the new hotel only officially being opened yesterday, the hotel has already been fully booked for the rest of this month. The rooms boast floor to ceiling windows, king- size or twin beds, lounges, widescreen televisions and DVDs. The hotel also has a lounge bar and restaurant, while each of the standard rooms has a separate area for children to give parents their own space during their holiday. Minehead resort director Darren Hollis said it would be at least a year before Butlins knew whether the hotel was a success but believed it could mark the way forward for the holiday company. He said: "The hotel will affect a lot of people's outdated perceptions of Butlins and should spark renewed interest." He said Butlins spent around £2 million a year constantly redeveloping and upgrading facilities at the Minehead resort, which already boasts top class entertainment and modern accommodation.
