Fundraisers are being invited to follow the example of Kate Allam by going for a swim in the sea at Minehead on New Year's Day to raise funds for St Margaret's Hospice. Kate took part in the New Year’s Day Dip in 2022 to pay tribute to her husband, Ray, who received hospice care after he was diagnosed with cancer.

She said it was the perfect way to remember Ray and support St Margaret’s Hospice. She said: “When you plunge into the cold water you get this rush of adrenaline, I can’t explain it but there’s nothing like it! So, if you’ve never done a dip before I’d encourage you to go ahead and try it. It’s so much fun and it’s a great way to support your local hospice.”

The hospice is currently running an early bird offer until Friday, 16 December, where you can secure your place for just £9 when you use the code EARLYBIRD23

The offer is valid for just a few more days and then entry will cost £12 so people are being urged to book your place now to take advantage. All sponsorship raised will help St Margaret’s continue to care for and support families across Somerset facing a life-limiting illness.

Every day, St Margaret’s nurses are visiting patients across Somerset with an end-of-life diagnosis, a vital service especially in rural communities like the West Somerset area. St Margaret’s can take the time to care for patients when they need it most but only with your support.

So, whether you are looking for challenge to kickstart the new year or something to nurse your hangover from the night before, we’d love to see you.

Ellie Weston, Marketing and Events Officer at St Margaret’s, said: “We can’t wait to join our supporters on the beach, whether you are from Minehead or further afield, why not blow the cobwebs away on New Year’s Day with a trip to the beach. Not only does immersing yourself in cold water bring great health benefits but you will also be raising vital funds to ensure St Margaret’s Hospice can continue supporting patients and their families in Somerset.

“Our early bird offer is live for just a few more days so please do sign up and get involved! Everyone who takes part will receive a St Margaret’s bobble hat, a chance to enter our raffle to win a dry robe and a hot drink after their dip. We hope to see as many of you there as possible!” For more details and to book your place visit https://www.st-margarets-hospice.org.uk/new-years-day-charity-dip
