Young and old in the village of Fitzhead, near Wiveliscombe, are gearing up for the annual fete highlight on Saturday July 25, and none more so than the Winter family, who have 37 entries between them in the Flower and Craft show.
Mum Holly, dad Tom, William, 8, and Rupert, 5, plus grandparents Paula and Ian Johnson, are all entering different categories from a decorated shell to homemade liqueur, gingerbread people to best tomatoes.
And their eyes are firmly set on winning the cup for the family with the most points in all classes.
“Over the next few weekends we will be crafting and colouring, and making the edible items just before the fete,” said Holly, who together with Tom, takes a day off work so the family can concentrate on preparing their entries.
“We love coming to the fete and the boys love going through the flower tent to see if they have got a certificate.”
In the meantime, stall holders, jam makers, cake bakers, athletes young and old, are also busy preparing for a weekend of fun with the fete on Saturday July 25, and the popular Duck Race on Sunday 26.
The event attracts visitors from miles around and has been taking place for decades. With free entry and parking, it offers a host of attractions from children’s races, with a medal for everyone, to brass band performances by Wiveliscombe Town Band, delicious teas to a barbecue and stalls.
The Duck Race on Sunday 26, will see 500 ducks racing off to an exciting start and several heats, while people follow alongside the river, plus delicious homemade cakes and teas on the lawns.
