SIR — As a past member of the Watchet and Williton Firework Safety Committee, I am pleased to see that they are hoping to renew their display. I feel this would ensure a drop in all the small uncontrolled firework parties.

Williton Parish Council and a group of volunteers from Williton and Watchet started these displays with safety in mind.

Over the 25 years the committee has seen the cost of the fireworks and insurance escalate.

Training people has also added to the cost and now these people are fully competent to run a display.

Yes, £1,000 seems a large sum towards a £3,000 display, but if it saves a child or adult from injury and discourages people from buying fireworks and holding private displays it would be money well spent.

I ask Williton Parish Council and the village people to support the work of the committee.
