SOME 600 people took the chance to have a look around the West Somerset College farm during last weekend's family fun day.

Visitors were able to watch displays and demonstrations which showcased the farm's facilities.

They were able to learn more about the animals, browse agricultural stalls and enjoy a host of outdoor activities.

These included Segway rides from the YMCA, archery with Brian Bland and pony rides courtesy of Burrowhayes Farm, West Luccombe.

Lee Jenkins, the college's animal management technician, ran exotic animal encounters. There were also sheep shearing demonstrations by Martyn Atkins and Bill Liversidge and a sheepdog display by Rabbit Slattery.

Bee encounters were overseen by Julian Wilford and Laurie McNeill and there was fun to be had on a bouncy castle and garden games.

Visitors were also able to tour the college nurseries and purchase plants and hanging baskets made by the horticulture students and apprentices.

Sophie Stephens, the college's senior farm technician, said: "It was a lovely day and great fun was had by all.

"The farm is a fantastic facility for our students providing real work experience in the agricultural industry.

"It is fantastic that we can put on days like today allowing local businesses and the community to come and see all of the hard work our staff and students do and really enjoy it.

"I would just like to say a huge thank you to all that helped make the day yet another success."
