The Exmoor Young Chef of the year has been named as Perran Clark, 15, from Braunton.

The competition organised by the Rotary Club of Minehead in conjunction with Butlins and Exmoor National Park took place at West Somerset Community College on Saturday 4th July.

Seven young hopefuls from all over Exmoor took part in the competition that was aimed at encouraging young people aged 13 to 17 years to take up hospitality as a career in Somerset.

Porlock Weir Head Chef, Miguel Teneiro and Visit Exmoor Hospitality Expert, Max Lawrence, judged the competition, and both agreed the standard was very high and they had great difficulty selecting a winner.

The rules of the competition were set by Butlins Development Chef, Werner Hartholt, Rotarian and Chef, Molly Foster, and National Park Sustainable Economy Officer, Katrina Munro. They required the seven young finalist to prepare and present a three course meal, using local Exmoor produce and all within two hours.

The runner up was 15 year old Nathan Reardon from Cullompton.

When presenting the prizes, which were all sponsored by local businesses, Werner Hartholt said: “Judging by these seven finalist, the future of Hospitality in Exmoor will be in safe hands if our young people stay in the area and continue to develop the skills they need.”
