MORE than £7,000 was raised on the night to help homeless ex-Services personnel from a ‘topless’ drive around London at the weekend joined by Wootton Courtenay driver Terry Jones.

Mr Jones had a 200-mile drive to reach London even before the midnight circuit of London on the M25 ring road, which itself was another 117 miles.

All the cars taking part in the annual Friends Round London event were ‘topless’, or open top, including Mr Jones’ modern classic MG convertible.

The money went to UK Homes 4 Heroes, which provides permanent homes and hostel-style accommodation for former Service men and women to have secure and clean living environments.

Mr Jones, who raised £120 with the help of family and friends, said the final total raised would not be known until the charity had received all donations and income from merchandising and auction activities.

He said: “It went well. More than 120 cars turned up and took part on a rather chilly night.

“We had a guy travel 650-plus miles from Thurso, Scotland, to join in.

“A large number turned up in fancy dress, contributing to a great party atmosphere for the two-hour build up before setting off from Colney Fields.”
