THERE is nothing like getting professional help when it comes to football – that is what children and teachers at Wiveliscombe Primary School have been finding out over the past year, with coaching from the community youth arm of Exeter City Football Club.

The school approached Exeter City Community Trust, and after some original one to one work, it grew into a weekly after-school session, with two coaches coming every week and anything from 12 to 20 children of all abilities taking part.
“They do warm-ups, football drills and skills and play games against each other, and there’s a buzz of excitement being affiliated with a professional club and not just the teachers they see every day,” said PE lead Connor Ashworth.

“It has a huge effect, we are constantly trying to increase physical engagement in schools.”
He said there had been a few girls taking part, although there was only one at the moment, and girls “need to be encouraged, it is a huge target nationally in primary schools.”

Headteacher Lucy Crowe said the after-school football club has helped pupils develop their football skills, build confidence and learn the importance of teamwork in a fun and supportive environment.
“It is one of the many opportunities available through the school’s wide range of teacher-led clubs, with a variety of activities to encourage creativity, confidence and enjoyment beyond the classroom,” she said.

Every teacher runs an after-school club at the primary school, while all children also take part in Forest School every week, she said, and enjoy exploring the natural environment while developing teamwork, independence and problem-solving skills through hands-on outdoor activities.
Exeter City Community Trust is the wellbeing and sport charity associated with Exeter City Football Club, and provides a wide range of programmes for young people across Somerset and Devon.
