A TUG-of-war challenge and a host of entertainment for the whole family will be among attractions at one of the area’s most popular summer events when Carhampton holds its annual village fete at the Recreation Ground on Saturday (July 11), starting at 1 pm.

The organisers are hoping this year’s event, which has been held in the village for at least 60 years, will exceed last year’s near-record attendance of more than 700 and raised more than £3,000 for village organisations.

The bells of the village’s St John the Baptist Church will ring out for the opening of the fete, which will feature the Minehead Samba Band, the Famished Folk Band, a display of vintage motorcycles and tractors, sheep-shearing, skittles, and ‘have-a-go’ archery.

There will also be a wide range of stalls, including tombola and plants, cakes, produce, and traditional crafts, plus refreshments, a barbecue, a Pimms tent, and a raffle with a £100 first prize.

A new addition this year will be a ‘Nearly New’ stall selling good quality clothing, shoes, and bags.

A special attraction will be a challenge by Williton Young Farmers’ tug-of-war team to take on all comers, with teams invited to enter on the day.

The Long Hall is the venue for an art exhibition and displays of items made by members of a number of village clubs and organisations.

These will include a display by Carhampton Flower Club based on the books of Agatha Christie on the 50th anniversary of her death.

A spokesperson said: “We are looking forward to a really successful fete this year but much help is always required in setting up on the morning of the event.

“If anybody can help out in any way, could they please let us know.”
