TEN muddy events are being held across the Quantock Hills during this month in partnership with the National Trust’s Fyne Court.

The ‘Month of Mud’ activities provide a timely exploration of the squelchy stuff which can be found in abundance in February.

Historically, February was known as ‘Solmonath’ in old English, which is often translated as ‘Mud Month’.

So, it is an appropriate time for people to ‘make the most of mud’.

The muddy festival features everything from storytelling, hikes, photographic walks, welly walks, family-friendly activities, creative craft and workshops, to mud bingo nature activity packs.

There is a mixture of free, drop-in, or small-fee rates.

Each walk has a ‘welly’ scale so people know how challenging, or muddy, it is likely to be.

A Quantock Hills management partnership spokesperson said: “Why stay stuck indoors when you could be stuck in the mud with us?

“For the month of February we will be finding our way from National Trust Fyne Court and the surrounding Quantock Hills in search of all things ‘Solmonath’.

“Make the most of February with our ‘Month of Mud’ events exploring everything to do with the squelchy stuff.

“Mud is one of the first ways we experience the freedom of the outdoors.”

During the schools half-term, Monday to Friday, February 16 to 20, Fyne Court will be hosting family-friendly muddy activities including wild walks, muddy mashups, storytelling, and more.

A free taster session will also be on offer for its popular Toddler Tuesday morning, which is aimed at children under five years of age and their carers.

Next up in the programme is a ‘Head for the Combes’ walk at 10 am on Saturday (February 14) followed by Blabbermouth storytelling on Monday at 11 am and 2 pm, and a mud-themed Toddler Tuesday from 10 am to 12 noon on February 17.
