THE annual Wootton Courtenay pop-up artisan and makers event takes place in the village hall on Saturday (May 31) to raise funds for the parish’s All Saints’ Church.

Hundreds of people were attracted to the Exmoor village for last year’s event, travelling from as far away as Bath for a family day out to mark the end of the schools half-term holiday.

Although initially set up to raise funds for the church, the event has become a much-loved occasion which puts the spotlight firmly on local artisan businesses, allowing them the space to showcase their different talents, everything from artists to textiles.

Silversmith Brian O’Hara, who makes high quality jewellery, will be among the businesses displaying this year, while returning is Cardigan Curiosities, an antiques and vintage business from West Wales which has been featured on television’s Bargain Hunt and Antique's Road Trip.

Cardigan Curiosities will be offering a number of Welsh vernacular items ranging from traditional wool blankets and love spoons to hand carved oak coffer boxes, as well as plenty of affordable curiosities and countless useable ceramics.

National charities, including Guide Dogs and the Hedgehog Trust, will also be at the event.

The day will also include a pop-up cafe which will serve handmade cakes, sandwiches, and other foods, as well as a raffle with prizes which have given by local businesses and individuals.

The event runs from 10 am to 3 pm with entry £1 for adults and all the funds going to the church, which needs to carry out roof repairs after discovering slates were slipping because of failing iron nails and woodworm were damaging roof timbers.

Spokeswoman Faith Millward said: “The emphasis is on sustainability, supporting small businesses, and offering parents a cheap day out for their children at the end of the half-term break.”
