THE Bristol Channel Yachting Association is returning to Watchet Marina this weekend for its annual English Coast Rally.

The event is being held from Saturday to Monday (August 28 to 30) and will be a special occasion as the association is celebrating its 70th anniversary.

It will also mark the event’s return to Watchet Marina after a gap of several years due to the siltation levels in the marina. The ongoing success of a dredging campaign in the marina has provided enough water depth for the event to return.

Boats will be descending on the marina over the weekend and create a display for visitors and maritime enthusiasts. Association members have been reminded to take their flags and bunting to participate in the best dressed boat competition.

An association spokesman, speaking on its social media Facebook page, said: “Some members might try the comedy approach – we have had underwear hoisted up the mast in the past! Whatever rocks your boat!”

Mayor of Watchet Cllr John Irven will carry out judging during the rally.

The event is being held in with Watchet Music Festival being staged from today (Friday) until Sunday.

Music will be on offer at the marina during the rally with The Steepholmers Shanty Band from Weston-super-Mare, who sing traditional shanties.
