ENGINEERS will be carrying out site investigation work in Williton next week in a bid to resolve the village's flooding problems.

The £4,500 study into flooding issues is part of on-going work by the Environment Agency to pinpoint the most appropriate flood defence improvements for the village.

Williton has a history of flooding - 40 homes and businesses were affected when the Monksilver Stream burst its banks in December 2000.

Now the agency's contractor Environmental Services Group Ltd (ESGL) is to carry out checks on the ground conditions to help define what steps can be taken to reduce the flood problem.

On Monday, the contractors will start a variety of tests including sinking boreholes, digging trial pits and testing soil samples. The work is expected to last one week.

"We are committed to explore all the flood defence options for Williton and this initial investigation work will help us to provide a sustainable solution to the problem of flooding in the village," said Jim Wright for the Environment Agency.

As work on developing the flood improvements progresses, public presentations and consultation will be held.
