AN award-winning West Somerset business became an employee-owned trust on Friday (June 20).

Watchet-based independent ecological and geological consultancy Geckoella Ltd announced the transition on what was nationally EO Day.

A celebration reception was being held in the company’s workshop on the town’s East Quay.

Employee trustee and ecologist Vanessa Lloyd said: “Being an employee-owner means we all have a direct say and stake in Geckoella’s success.

“It creates a truly collaborative environment where everybody’s contributions are valued, and we all work together for a shared future for our company and the environment.”

Principal geologist and founder trustee Dr Andy King said: “Becoming employee-owned roots good jobs and investment more resiliently in our community for the longer term.

“We are excited to celebrate this new chapter for the business on EO Day and look forward to the benefits for our employees, clients, and the wider environment and economy.”

Employee ownership is the UK’s fastest-growing business model, doubling since 2022, with the Employee Ownership Association, whch organises EO Day, aiming for three per cent of UK business ownership by 2030.

This year’s EO Day theme is ‘The Power of the EO Smile’, highlighting how employee ownership boosts working lives, livelihoods, and opportunities.

Empowered employees, invested in the business, foster an owner’s mindset, driving productivity, innovation, and positive community and environmental impacts.

Geckoella will continue to provide expert ecological and geological advice to both private and public sectors, finding solutions that drive growth while benefiting the environment and communities.

The company’s future success will be further empowered by a team deeply engaged in its long-term achievements through employee ownership.

Geckoella has been advising Watchet Town Council on the effects and risks of coastal erosion in the area, particularly for West Street Beach and on Cleeve Hill, where the B3191 road to Blue Anchor has been closed because of cliff collapse.
