THE Libra School, near South Molton, which provides for children with special educational needs, has been graded as “outstanding” by Ofsted in its latest report.

The independent school, which has 24 pupils, caters for youngsters with special needs requiring a statement, and those with learning difficulties and emotional and behavioural problems.

A spokesperson for the school, which has students aged from five to 18, said: “Libra’s aim is to help young people resolve their difficulties, bring harmony to their lives, stimulate ambition, help identify targets and achieve qualification so that they are able to enter adulthood better prepared.

“Professionals have described us as ‘a breath of fresh air’ and parents and carers speak highly of us as ‘this school has been a lifesaver’ and ‘I can’t praise Libra enough. It is outstanding’.”

Head teacher Joan Wilkes congratulated staff and pupils on the glowing Ofsted report which noted: “Pupils are at the heart of this outstanding school. Leaders have the highest expectations of staff and pupils. They are relentless in their pursuit to further improve this outstanding provision.”

The Ofsted report also praised the quality of teaching, learning and assessment and the behaviour of pupils.

“Teachers are passionate in their work. They show a determination to provide the very best education they can for pupils. Pupils with a history of extremely challenging behaviour and significant mental health issues make outstanding progress from their starting points.

“Pupils’ behaviour is typically outstanding around the school and in lessons. They have a clear understanding of what constitutes acceptable behaviour, and recognise the importance of education.”

The report praises the strong relationships between pupils and staff which makes pupils feel safe and secure. It adds “Parents and carers speak highly of the school and of the quality of learning opportunities it provides for their children and the stability and care given.”

The school received an outstanding assessment in all four inspected areas.
