HIGH-achieving pupils from Danesfield and Minehead Middle Schools are participating in a programme created to widen access to highly-selective universities for state-school pupils.

The Scholars Programme, by The Brilliant Club, enables pupils to study with PhD tutors and 24 Minehead and Williton pupils visited the University of Bristol to see what it had to offer.

As well as gaining an insight into life at a top university, the pupils were able to investigate the courses available and ask questions of university staff and current students.

And they experienced their first university-style tutorials, held in their own schools, in which they explored the topics ‘Into the Deep Dark Woods: A Journey Through Literature’ and ‘Understanding Viral Infections: Is Ebola The Next International Pandemic?’.

The Brilliant Club is an award-winning charity that aims to see more pupils from under-represented backgrounds progress to highly-selective universities.

Its Scholars Programme is an eight-week course for students in years five to 12 who are teamed up in small groups with PhD-level tutors for university-style teaching.

It is designed to help pupils fulfil their academic potential a by complementing what they learn at school, challenging them to stretch their minds and helping them develop the skills necessary to secure a top university place.
