A LOOK at the inside of the first Hinkley Point C nuclear reactor is being offered by owners EDF.

Hinkley C delivery director Simon Parsons takes people on a behind the scenes tour in a new video released on Wednesday (May 6).

It shows the fit out of unit one accelerating and the teams preparing to install an identical second reactor in unit two.

The video also shows the assembly of the world’s largest steam turbine the Arabelle, and work to dig a fish return tunnel, one of the three fish protection systems for the power station.

The fit-out phase involves 230 miles of pipework, more than 6,400 miles of cables, 35,700 valves and 35,000 lights, together with with large amounts of other pumps, valves, and control equipment.

Work on fitting out the Hinkley Point C power station is gathering pace.

Thanks to innovation and the experience gained by crews from working on unit one, the Hinkley C teams have been building the second reactor unit between 20 and 30 per cent faster.

EDF said the experience would benefit Britain’s next nuclear power station, Sizewell C, from the start.

Mr Parsons said: “Our civil construction teams have nearly completed all of unit one’s buildings and have now turned their attention to unit two.

“We are using all the experience from building the first unit to do the job even better second time round.

“In unit one, new teams have moved in to fit the huge amount of equipment, supports, pipes, valves, and cables that we need.

“Transitioning into this new phase has been tough going, but now we are really getting moving and gaining momentum by adopting an industrial mindset, taking the processes that worked best and scaling them up.”

The two Hinkley C reactors will provide low-carbon electricity for Britain throughout their expected 60 years of generating power.
