DUNSTER Castle has been honoured for its work with local schools and colleges by scooping a national award - for the second time.

The Heritage Education Trust's Sandford Award for Education was presented to the castle's property manager William Wake and learning officer Jim Lee by Prince Edward at a ceremony at Windsor Castle.

The accolade puts Dunster alongside previous high profile winners who include the Tower of London, Blenheim Palace and fellow National Trust sites Montecute House, Corfe Castle and Chedworth Roman villa.

A panel of professional experts, including former headteachers and education consultants, gave Dunster's living history tours a special mention - in particular the 'siege and surrender' events which give children the chance to wear 17th century clothing, march, take up arms and learn how to be English Civil War soldiers.

The regular event brings to life Dunster's link with the English Civil War story when the Royal garrison had to defend the castle during the assault by Colonel Blake and his Parliamentarian army.

Mr Lee said the award meant a great deal to the castle team.

"We have excellent relationships with local schools and colleges and pride ourselves on our ongoing work with them," he said.

"We always try to go the extra mile when looking after all our visitors.

"We try to bring to life in the most dramatic way the castle's turbulent past during one of the most violent times in English history."

Sandford Award judge Carolyn Wheeler said the education offered at Dunster revealed the unique factors of the site through interesting and exciting tours.

"The broad sweep of national history is made specific and personal to Somerset and Dunster by the clever and knowledgeable staff at the castle.

"Dunster is a gem in the National Trust crown."
