A DAILY glass of sherry and a near-lifetime of keep-fit is a recipe for success for centenarian Doris Chamberlin. Mrs Chamberlin celebrated her special birthday last week with friends and neighbours in her Minehead home. And with two cakes and several bouquets of flowers to get her in the party mood, she swapped her normal tipple for a glass of champagne. Mrs Chamberlin has lived in the town for the last 30 years, retiring there with her late husband Ross from Birmingham. The couple met while working for the former Birmingham Corporation and were married during World War Two. They moved to Somerset to be near Ross's family and retirement gave him the opportunity to become a volunteer with the West Somerset Railway. Sadly, he died 13 years ago, but his widow continues to maintain her independence with the help of carers. Neighbour Ruth Stevens, who arranged the party, said: "Doris loves her garden and her daily glass of sherry - she always say it's what keeps her going. "But she has also been a lifelong follower of keep- fit and attended a club regularly until she was 90." When she was younger, Mrs Chamberlin counted walking and flower arranging among her hobbies but now she enjoys simply pottering in the garden. "The celebration was lovely and she really enjoyed seeing everyone," said Mrs Stevens. Photo: Steve Guscott.
