SIR —Over the years I have visited Dunster many times and have always found it a pleasant experience. However, on Monday October 6 I found myself drawn to the dedication plaque to the fallen outside the Memorial Hall. The sight I saw caused me concern and anger as just below the plaque is an ashtray fixed to the wall for people to extinguish their cigs. Whilst I have no objection to people smoking, I do take issue with an ashtray being placed under a commemoration plaque. In my opinion, it shows disrespect to the fallen and should be removed at once. I cannot believe that no-one else has expressed concern given the recent anniversary of the start of World War One. With the forthcoming November ceremonies in mind, can this be drawn to the attention of the local council and action taken to remove it? I am an ex-serviceman myself and would ask others to make their feelings known. Rest assured, I will not let this go until a sensible conclusion has come about. Haydn Grove, The Grove, Bristol.
