SIR — Full marks to whoever decided to introduce the new lighting in Minehead's Avenue.
The tramway style poles with their span wires and large lanterns will surely enhance the general atmosphere and achieve a real improvement over the nondescript lamps being replaced.
What a shame, then, that the contractors were not aware, as their predecessors who erected genuine tram or trolleybus overhead would have been, that the poles should have been planted with a backwards "rake" putting them a few degrees out of the vertical.
The subsequent additional weight of the spans and suspended fittings would then pull the poles into a correct vertical position.
As it is, most of these nice new poles are now leaning inwards and the overall effect is somewhat spoiled.
