SIR — As a former resident of Somerset for almost 50 years, the last 25 in West Somerset, I lived with the nuclear power station at Hinkley Point all that time.

One of my many jobs involved an occasional visit to Hinkley for deliveries and, no, I do not glow green at night.

I now live in the Highlands of Scotland and more and more of the countryside is being ruined by wind turbines. The M74 was one of the most beautiful motorways in the UK and now many miles of it has been ruined by those beasties.

Imagine a row of 300-foot turbines built on the hills overlooking Williton through to Minehead and you will get the idea.

There are turbines all over the lovely highlands and if there is too much wind, which is often, they don't turn, and if there is not enough wind they don't turn, so do not believe all the hype about them, they are not that good.

At last wave and tidal power projects are being considered seriously. There are plans to put a tidal power project not far from where I live and this will be hardly noticeable. Imagine a wind turbine - but under water.

Hinkley power station has been situated where it is for a long, long time and I do feel sorry for the residents whose lives are going to be disrupted.

The one thing about the scheme that really amazes me is the lunatic idea for a park and ride scheme at Williton.

The roads between Williton and Hinkley are narrow and twisty and even one extra vehicle a day would be one to many. I hope sanity will prevail and the extra accommodation will be built at Bridgwater, as the there are decent roads all the way to Hinkley.
