SIR — I would like to say how angry our family is at Watchet Town Council's latest plans to bring in a dog ban at the memorial ground.
This shows favouritism to the sports clubs at the exclusion of good dog owners of Watchet, those who even with disabilities and of old age who do pick up their dogs' mess.
We walk our dogs here come rain or shine. This area is the only flat large area in the town where people with mobility problems can walk their dogs in safety. The beach is inaccessible to us, as are the hills around us.
The council is only moving a problem to another area.
Driving dog walkers out of the memorial ground will not stop irresponsible dog owners. They will only make other areas of Watchet like the streets and grass verges new fouling areas.
This area is a civic amenity and as such should be open to all.
As a disabled member of society, having a dog gives me a purpose and the company to be able to get mild exercise, which is suppose to be a right for us all.
Should I and many people like me be discriminated against because we can't play cricket or football?
We are also the eyes and ear on the memorial ground, which is often vandalised, and without dog walkers the park will be deserted, a real waste of green land.
It also shows the many visitors I have met in the park with their dogs that Watchet is unfriendly to dogs and they may not bother to return to our lovely town.
I feel "dogs on leads only" would help this problem as when a dog stops to go to loo the owner will know and then pick it up.
We are part of this town, so councillors start looking at our point of view too!
