SIR — In the event of the A39 being closed, Cllr Rosemary Woods (Free Press December 6) suggests highways chiefs should consider implementing a one-way system, with traffic travelling towards Minehead going via Washford and Roadwater and coming back onto the A39 from the Withycombe turning.

As a resident of Withycombe living in Mill Street on the narrowest squeeze point in the village, I would be strongly opposed to any extra traffic passing this way.

My cottage is on the roadside and has been subjected to more than one hit and many more near misses despite a row of large white stones.

Added to which there is the almost blind bend by the Old Mill Causeway that regularly causes problems.

Large, heavy vehicles already use this route to surrounding farms and businesses. Any extra traffic would make living here untenable with the noise and vibrations shaking the very fabric of my cottage.

I agree with Cllr Heather Beaver - "It is time we started getting more vociferous about the state of our roads" - and Cllr Robert McDonald who said something certainly needs to change for the future.

Changes and diversions, but not through narrow residential villages.
