A decision to cease distributing commercial refuse sacks free of charge in South Somerset has been confirmed after a challenge failed.

At the moment, companies get 60 free sacks on the purchase of the first 60 sacks. It is estimated that 600 companies throughout the area make use of the service but by scrapping free provision, the District Executive felt that £29,500 could be saved.

As previously reported, district councillors Tony Fife and Dave Gladding convinced fellow members of the Scrutiny Committee to ask the District Executive to reconsider.

Their concern was that smaller businesses would be hit financially and that illegal dumping would increase.

The District Executive, however, stood firm and declared its intention to stop the delivery of free sacks at a recent meeting.

Distribution of free sacks will be discontinued at the end of March this year, coinciding with the implementation of a new kerbside recycling scheme.
