WATCHET town councillor Tony Bowden has slammed West Somerset District Council for keeping residents and civic leaders in the dark over recent planning schemes.

Cllr Bowden will be putting forward a motion of no confidence in the district council following a series of clashes between the two authorities.

The district authority has been accused of frequently failing to inform Watchet Town Council in good time of planning matters that affect the town.

But Cllr Bowden told the Free Press that residents reached the end of their tether when the controversial social housing plans for Anchor Street were unveiled.

He said: "The final straw came with the proposal for the development in Anchor Street. Regardless of the strength of the proposal, the fact is that once again the residents are being landed with a scheme that has already been through the process at the district council.

"Due to the continual lack of consultation and the lack of any consideration of the views of our residents, we, the representatives of Watchet, have no confidence in West Somerset District Council.

"The recent fiasco with the proposed social housing development at Anchor Street was poorly handled with seemingly little or no consideration of the impact of a development on the site."

Cllr Bowden claimed the district authority had also held back information from residents relating to the development of the East Quay.

He added: "The district council seems to have forgotten that it is employed by the people and is therefore our employee and as such we appear to be run much as an old-fashioned 'rotten borough'."

Last year, when he was town council chairman, Cllr Bowden attacked the district authority for poor communication and a lack of response to queries.

His motion of no confidence in the district council will be tabled at next Monday's town council meeting. Cllr Dave Westcott will also be addressing members about the Anchor Street development.
