TOWN councillors who were unable to agree on a location for a Minehead Pumptrack are to hold a special meeting to try again.

Councillors received an updated business plan on Tuesday (October 27) in which Minehead Pump Track Community Interest Company (CIC) expressed a preference for it to be built on the Culvercliffe open space near the harbour.

The CIC wanted Culvercliffe identified as the preferred site for further investigation, subject to the necessary permissions, approvals, and legal requirements.

The council noted the pumptrack plans had been further developed after earlier discussions and feedback from councillors, and contained more detail on the project’s objectives.

However, they were unable to agree after detailed discussions during which it was suggested Cross Farm Park and the King George V Playing Field, Alcombe, might have potential.

Now, councillors will hold an informal gathering before their finance and general purposes committee meeting on Tuesday, November 10.

They will review the updated business case and carry out an initial appraisal of potential locations, including the respective advantages, disadvantages, constraints, and opportunities of each.

A report will then be prepared setting out the findings of the informal appraisal to be presented to a formal full council meeting.

The October 27 meeting accepted there appeared to be community support for a pumptrack in Minehead, but that further consideration was required to determine the most appropriate location.

Opinion was divided on Culvercliffe, which could be suitable but would need to ensure the area remained inclusive and accessible for all users, with its pedestrian and cycling links via Quay Street.

There were also practical implications with ground conditions because it was a former municipal refuse tip.

A CIC spokesperson said it was not the hoped for result from the meeting but it now seemed the council was going to be more proactive in helping to find a suitable location.
