SOMERSET libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge is back – but with a slight twist.
A new digital platform called the ’Silly Squad’ will offer fun and adventures to keep children aged between four and 11 entertained.
While the Summer Reading Challenge will only be available online in 2020, it will still provide children with the educational value and ‘fun factor’ it has had in previous years.
The Silly Squad are a team of animal friends who love to go on adventures and read funny books. This new challenge will allow children to take control of their reading and be rewarded online for their progress.
Children will play an online game to win rewards and create their own reading profile. This will allow them to set reading goals, review books and enjoy a safe forum to chat with friends.
There will also be a section where users can download and print some activities to complete over the summer.
Cllr David Hall, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for libraries, said: “We are confident the Silly Squad challenges and activities will really engage younger readers.
“A recent survey commissioned by The Reading Agency showed that 45 per cent of young people are reading more during lockdown, so this year’s challenge is perhaps more important than ever before to help keep young people interested in reading for pleasure.”
To get involved, create a reading profile at www.sillysquad.org.uk and start unlocking new challenges and earning rewards.
From July 11, Somerset Libraries will be releasing local weekly activities that families can also enjoy from home.
