THE search is on for a cosmic hero or heroine who can protect the darkness and wonders of Exmoor’s Dark Sky Reserve.
Exmoor National Park Authority (ENPA) is calling on the area’s youngsters to design a ‘Dark Skies Park Protector’ as part of its annual dark skies festival, running from Friday, October 17, to Sunday, November 2.
A park spokesperson said: “We hope the competition will encourage young minds to design their own character who helps protect Exmoor’s internationally recognised dark sky reserve.
“Entrants are asked to imagine a hero who travels the night skies, keeping light pollution at bay and ensuring the stars shine brightly for all to enjoy.
“Whether it is a cosmic creature, a magical guardian, or a futuristic robot, the character should reflect the importance of preserving natural darkness and celebrating the wonders of the night sky.”
The contest is open to youngsters aged 11 years or younger who are asked to create and send in a drawing of their dark skies protector along with a short description.
Entries must be submitted by Sunday, November 2, and the overall winner will receive a Celestron telescope.
Winning designs will be showcased during the festival and featured on the national park’s website and social media channels.
The festival will feature more than 70 events, including stargazing walks, planetarium sessions, nocturnal wildlife experiences, and creative workshops.
ENPA rural enterprise co-ordinator Julie Colman, who is organising the festival, said: "The competition will be a wonderful way of engaging children with the magic of the night sky and the importance of protecting it.
“Youngsters can create a protector through a painting or drawing, computer graphics, Lego, clay, or even through Minecraft.
“We are looking for imagination and creativity and cannot wait to see what comes in."
Entry is via the national park website, which has full details.
