DOUG the rhea, a distant cousin to ostriches and emus, has been rescued after being missing in a 48-hour ordeal.
His owner Jane Foster was “ecstatic” when husband Richard managed to climb down a steep bank on the couple’s farm at Sampford Brett and bring him to safety.
“Doug just ran down the lane back to the farm. He seemed ever so relieved to see us - and his sibling Kevin,” said Jane.
Doug’s ordeal started last Wednesday when he went missing and his owners spread the word and appealed for any information, including on the Free Press website.
Someone saw him and pinned against a fence down a steep bank on the lane that leads to Williton: “There is speculation he was chased by a dog and had fallen down and got trapped," said Jane.
