JOCKEY Matt Griffiths, whose car collided with a tree on an Exmoor road, resulting in the death of a 27-year-old passenger on October 3, is in a stable situation but doctors are unsure of his long-term prognosis due to a brain injury, it was reported in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Mr Griffiths, 31, has been transferred to Taunton’s Musgrove Park Hospital from Southmead Hospital, Bristol, where he was taken in a critical condition with head injuries after the accident which did not involve any other vehicle and occurred on the B3224 at Exford.

His passenger in his BMW car, Timothy Gill from Exford, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement issued by the Injured Jockeys’ Fund, Mr Griffiths’ mother Christine said: “Matt remains in a stable condition. We think he is now able to recognise close family members but the doctors are not yet sure of Matt’s long-term prognosis due to a brain injury.

“We have received so many messages of support and are really grateful to everyone who has contacted us. She added that her son was unable to receive visitors.

Mr Griffiths is a stable jockey at Jeremy Scott’s yard at Brompton Regis and has won 139 races from 1,300 rides in his career. His biggest success came earlier this year when he won the Ascot Chase on Dashel Drasher, which was trained by Mr Scott.

Avon and Somerset Police are still investigating the fatal accident and ask anyone with information to call on 101 and give the reference number 5221230833.
