THE Porlock community is supporting a hill climb organised by Minehead Cycling Club – and riders have until Tuesday (September 8) to enter.

Rising to the challenges of the pandemic, the event on Sunday, September 20 returns after a gap in 2019.

It takes place on Porlock Toll Road, rising 400 metres from the village to finish on open moorland overlooking the Bristol Channel.

Riders of all abilities are welcome, riders set off at one-minute intervals and are timed up the 4.2 mile hill.

Event secretary Louise Crossman said: “The Porlock Hill Climb is a brilliant and friendly event that attracts elite athletes and amateurs alike.

“We’re really grateful that Porlock village is supporting the event where the Toll Road provides a traffic-free environment for the riders and lots of space, allowing us to meet Covid-19 requirements.

“Inevitably, events have been hard to come by this year and we would love to see riders taking advantage of this opportunity.

“The event also attracts Britain’s best hill climbers and the competition for the top male and female spots will be intense and hard fought for.”

In 2018 English champion Dan Evans and Welsh champion Ed Lavarack were denied victory by Charlie Meredith, from Devon, and Lauren Dolan, also from Devon, took the women’s win.

Entries need to be made by midnight on Tuesday. How to enter and more details on the event can be found at https://minehead.cc/porlock-hill-climbPhoto: Exmoor 4 All
