Postponed Cutcombe Show beats the weather and entertains visitors

WEATHER for the annual Cutcombe Show on Sunday, September 6, held good at such a late date in the year after it was postponed from June due to an outbreak of equine flu in the area.

The day started off dry but quite cool with the sun coming out later, but visitors did not have much time to think about the weather.

Ring two had a busy morning with a good entry of ponies, and organisers thanked judge Di Chanin for her skills in sorting them.

Ruby Merchant and Teddy won the leading rein class for the Jim Stevens Cup for a third successive year.

The show prides itself on being a starting point for many young riders, as it is usually run in June and kicks off the season as an introduction for many.

A good example being the Gill and Jacky Handy pony/hobby horse ring which was kept really busy, providing fun for the riders and entertainment for spectators.

There were also good entries in the clear round jumping ring classes with courses built to give young riders confidence.

The main ring finished earlier than expected but meant there was time for some children’s sports before a fancy dress competition giving judge Brenda Coates a hard task with a large class of entries.

The gymkhana games provided an entertaining afternoon for spectators, who had arrived when the sun came out, and was a lot of fun for riders.

A spokesperson said: “Our thanks to our loyal sponsors who enable us to make sufficient profit to benefit our local schools and village amenities.

“From the last show, the main donations were given to Cutcombe School, the Moorland Hall, and the Exmoor Health Hub, all huge assets to village life.

“Many thanks also to all our helpers for making this show happen.”
