CARHAMPTON’S traditional village fete was hailed as a scorching success on Saturday when despite temperatures hotter than the Sahara, a near-record attendance raised more than £3,000 for village organisations.
A crowd of more than 700 enjoyed attractions including crafts and produce stalls, Morris dancing, folk music, sheep-shearing, spinning, an art exhibition, archery, hand bell-ringing, a fire and rescue vehicle and a ‘petting pony’ from Exmoor Pony Centre.

Highlights included a display of more than 60 vintage and modern motorcycles, classic cars, engines and tractors, and a tug-of-war organised by Williton Young Farmers.
Lucy Parker, one of the organisers, said: “We were thrilled so many people braved the heat to give us their support.
“Not surprisingly, cold drinks and ice-cream were top of everybody’s list!”
